Effect of the particle-size distribution of crystals on color properties of azo pigments. Baranov, B. A.; Mai, L. S.; Sergeeva, Z. I. (Nauchno-Issled. Inst. Org. Poluprod. Krasitelei, Moscow, USSR). Deposited Doc., VINITI 3153-75, 16 pp. Avail. VINITI (Russian) 1975. DOCUMENT TYPE: Report CA Section: 42 (Coatings, Inks, and Related Products) Section cross-reference(s): 40 The color brightness (I), hue, satn. value, and covering power in transparent binders of Pigment Lightfast Yellow (I) [2512-29-0], Pigment Fast Orange (II) [3468-63-1], and Pigment Scarlet N (III) [2425-85-6] depend on the statistically-detd. mean av. pigment particle sizes, calcd. from their surface areas (ds) and vols (dv). The increase of ds and dv of I and III decreases their I, but for II the highest I is obtained at ds and dv u0.2m. Mixing of pigments with different ds and dv produces blends with ds and dv arithmetically proportional to their compns. The decrease of ds and dv shifts the max. light absorption of the pigments towards shorter light wavelengths. The max. covering power of I is obtained at ds = 0.35-0.55 m; for II the optimum ds is u0.2 m; and for III it is u0.4 m.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Report CA Section: 42 (Coatings, Inks, and Related Products) Samples contg. 400 single pigment crystals are of sufficient size for detg. the statistical distribution of crystal size (d), surface area vs. d, and vol. vs. d relations. These distributions, obtained for Lightfast Pigment Yellow [2512-29-0], Fast Pigment Orange [3468-63-1], and Pigment Scarlet N [2425-85-6], were the same when samples contg. 400 or >400 crystals were used.
