DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) The effect of niclosamide (I) [50-65-7] (particle size 1 .mu.m) and its piperazine salt [34892-17-6] (particle size 5-10 .mu.m) on E. granulosus and T. hydatigena was investigated in dogs. The piperazine salt of I was also tested for activity against T. ovis. Irrespective of particle size, the drug was virtually inactive against 28-day-old E. granulosus. Some evidence was found indicating that there may be a low degree of activity against 70-day-old worms. The drug was effective at 32 mg/kg and 64 mg/kg against T. hydatigena and 50 mg/kg against T. ovis. Some evidence was obtained that milk decreased the efficiency of the piperazine salt against T. hydatigena at the lower dose rates. Micronization of the drug did not increase the efficiency against this parasite. Vomiting and diarrhea were common sequelae.

The 24-h LC50-values of Depifen (I-piperazine-phenothiazine mixt.) [63514-11-4] and Mansonil (I piperazine salt) [34892-17-6], were 9.9 and 0.31 mg/L, resp. Feeding the therapeutic feed Botriokarpin (contg. 8 g Depifen/kg) to carp in ponds, at 120 mg/kg for 2 days, followed by feeding for 1 day after a 14-day interval, treated the invasion. Tobacco dust mixed with feed was less effective.
