DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 40 (Dyes, Fluorescent Whitening Agents, and Photosensitizers) 1-(3-Chloro-2-tetrahydrofuryl)-4-methylquinolinium chloride [67189-99-5], prepd. by reaction of HCl-free 2,3-dichlorotetrahydrofuran [3511-19-1] with 4-methylquinoline [491-35-0], was treated with HC(OEt)3, 3-ethyl-2-(ethylthio)benzothiazolium p-toluenesulfonate [5231-22-1], 1-ethyl-2-(ethylthio)quinolinium chloride [67190-01-6], 1-ethyl-2(ethylthio)-6-methylquinolinium chloride [67190-02-7], or 5-(anilinomethylene)-3-ethylthiazolidine-2-thion-4-one [39542-83-1] to give mono-, di-, or trimethinecyanine dyes, the absorption spectra and photog. sensitizing properties of which were studied. Absorption max. were essentially the same as those of the corresponding 1-ethylquinoline analogs, showing that the 3-chloro-2-tetrahydrofuryl group has no effect on their optical properties. Dyes I [67190-05-0] and II [67190-06-1] showed av. sensitizing efficiency and a slightly above-av. tendency to fog photog. emulsions. ..
