DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) The title emulsions, useful as thickeners, flocculants, hair setting lotions, etc., are prepd. by the photochem. polymn. of oil emulsions of aq. solns. of monomers contg. photoinitiators on continuously moving bands. Thus, an emulsion of mineral oil 3, 70% mineral oil soln. of fatty alkyl methacrylate-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate polymer emulsifier 1, acrylaminde 2.3, [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride 2.3, adipic acid 0.23, and H2O 1.13 kg contg. 0.69 g Na 2-anthraquinonesulfonate and 0.16 g benzoin was poured continuously as a 5-10-mm layer on a moving polyethylene band (residence time 1 h) and exposed to 3 UV lamps at a distance of 5-15 cm (emulsion internal temp. 30-70°) to give a 47.3% emulsion of copolymer [35429-19-7] having viscosity 825 mPa-s, which dissolved readily in H2O to give a 1% soln. having viscosity 5000 mPa-s and pH 3.1.

These chemicals are also mentioned in this article. monomers contg. CH2:CR1CO2YN+R2R3R4 X- [e.g., R1 = Me; R2 and R3 = Me; R4 = Me, Et, and benzyl; X = Cl, MeOSO3 and EtOSO3; and Y = CH2CH2 and CH2CH(OH)CH2] gives stable emulsions with low viscosity which enable efficient emulsion polymn. Av. no. (n) of ethyleneoxy units in I is detd. by: 14 .gtoreq. n .gtoreq.5; n .gtoreq. (c/10) + 2 (c = concn. by wt. of I in aq. part of the emulsion). Thus, 200 g CH2:CMeCO2CH2CH2N+Me3 Cl- and 100 g acrylamide dissolved in 200 g water were stirred with 750 g cyclohexane and 37.5 g I (n = 9) [26571-11-9] to give a stable oil-in-water emulsion. The atm. was replaced by N at 50.degree. and 5 g aq. 10% (NH4)2S2O8 soln. was added and the emulsion kept at 50.degree. for 3 h with stirring to give a slurry contg. 0.1-1-mm hydrated polymer (II) [35429-19-7] particles dispersed in cyclohexane. The mixt. was treated with 500 g Me2CO and II decanted. II was again treated with Me2CO, filtered of, and dried in vacuo to give a powd. water-sol. product. .
