DOCUMENT TYPE: Conference CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Maize (Zea mays) seeds were coated with 35S-labeled thiram (I) [137-26-8] (700 ppm), and the plants were harvested at the end of 20, 50, and 80 days.Several substances with their cas registry numbers 124-40-3 and 4422-19-9 may be metioned in this study. I as such was not present in the maize plants at any of the growth stages up to cob formation. The uptake of 35S label at the 20-day stage was 0.36% of the total applied as I-35S. I was converted into compds. like DDC-alanine [4422-19-9], DDC-glucoside [19200-26-1], fungicide X and TTCA [3586-60-5]. The quantity of these compds. decreased in plants with time and were in negligible amts. at cob stage. The S from I found its way into S-contg. metabolites like protein, amino acids, sulfolipid, etc. Microbial degrdn. of I was unequivocally shown by comparing the persistence of I-35S in sterilized and unsterilized soils, isolation of I degrading Pseudomonas species and the evolution of CS-2 from fungicide treated soil. There was an increase in water-sol. metabolites in the unsterilized soil following treatment with I and this was also obsd. in nutrient both inoculated with Pseudomonas species and treated with I. DMA [124-40-3] was one of the degdn. products. The possible pathways of I degdn. both in plants and soil are discussed. .
