The tri-Me deriv. had significant smooth-muscle-stimulant activity in vitro and moderate analgesic activity. Only these 4 compds. were tested pharmacol. of the 14 N- and O-substituted rosmaricines for which complete synthetic data are given. In addn., rosmaricine and several N-substituted rosmaricines were prepd. by aerobic reaction of the carnosic acid [3650-09-7] present in the EtOH ext. of Rosmarinus officinalis leaves with NH3 and amines, resp. The reaction yield depended on the steric hindrance exerted by the amine; yields were good only with simple amines. Finally, general procedures are given for the synthesis of O,O-di-Me ethers of rosmaricine and its derivs., O,O-di-Me N-halocylrosmaricines, and O,O-di-Me N-aminoacylrosmaricines.
