DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Nine peroxides were tested for embryotoxicity in 3-day chicken embryos using the air-chamber method. The potencies were expressed by the ED50 for the total embryotoxic effect of the chem., including deaths and malformations, up to day 14 of the incubation. The range of the ED50's was from 0.13 to 2.7 mmoles/egg and the order of the potencies was as follows: cyclohexanone peroxide [12262-58-7] > cumene hydroperoxide [80-15-9] > ethyl Me ketone peroxide [1338-23-4] > benzoyl peroxide [94-36-0] > acetylacetone peroxide [37187-22-7] > tert-Bu perbenzoate (I) [614-45-9] > cumene peroxide (II) [80-43-3] > lauroyl peroxide [105-74-8] > H2O2. All 9 peroxides caused malformations at a moderate frequency. The max. percentage of malformed embryos of the treated varied from the 16% of I to the 56% of II. The high percentage caused by II could, however, result from slow diffusion of high LDs from the air chamber to the embryo.
