- Photogating of ionic currents across a lipid bilayer
- Drain, C. M.; Christensen, B.; Mauzerall, D. (Rockefeller Univ., New York, NY 10021, USA). Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A., 86(18), 6959-62 (English) 1989. CODEN: PNASA6. ISSN: 0027-8424. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 6 (General Biochemistry) The photoformation of metalloporphyrin cations in a lipid bilayer increased the ionic currents of neg. and decreased those of pos. hydrophobic ions. At low concns. of the mobile hydrophobic ion, a 30% change in cond. was obsd. that decreased with increasing concn. Some chemicals with cas registry numbers like 3720-53-4 are also used. of pos. tetraphenylphosphonium ion and increased drastically with increasing concn. of neg. tetraphenylboride ion. In the region of satd. conductance of boride, the increase in cond. was 3.6-fold. A 15-fold increase was obsd. with the protonophore, carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone. In this case, the net charge gated was 300-fold greater than the photogenerated charge in the bilayer membrane. Thus, there is a net gain in this org. field effect phototransistor. The gating could also be accomplished by continuous light of chem. oxidants. Photogating was explained as space charge effects inside the bilayer. .
