DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 51 (Fossil Fuels, Derivatives, and Related Products) Section cross-reference(s): 24 Based on mass spectral and chromatog. data, in alkylation with isooctane [540-84-1] in the presence of AlCl3, adamantane [281-23-2] yielded tri-, tetra-, penta-, and hexabutyladamantanes (56% 1,3,5-tributyl- [59856-61-0] and 1,3,5,7-tetrabutyladamantane [63758-81-6], in whch the iso-n-sec-butyl ratio was :15 with tert-butyl absent) and small amts. of tetrapentyl- [63757-69-7] and hexyltripentyladamantane [63757-67-5], 1,1'-biadamantyl [3732-31-8] yielded mainly polybutylbiadamantyls with asym. substitution, and diamantane [2292-79-7] yielded .apprx.50g dibutyl- (chiefly 4,9-dibutyl- [63835-96-1]), 25% monobutyl- (chiefly 4-butyl- [63835-97-2]), and 25% tributyldiamantane [63757-68-6] with small amts. of pentyl derivs. As components in lubricating oils, these adamantane derivs. resembled such alkanes as squalane in oxidative stability and naphthenes in viscosity behavior.
