- Activity of amoxycillin, alone, and in combination with aminoglycoside antibiotics against streptococci associated with bacterial endocarditis. Basker, M. J.; Sutherland, R. (Beecham Pharm. Res. Div., Brockham Park/Betchworth/Surrey, Engl.). J. Antimicrob. Chemother., 3(3), 273-82 (English) 1977. CODEN: JACHDX. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) Clin. isolates of Streptococcus viridans, S. bovis, and enterococci (S. faecalis) were tested for sensitivity to amoxycillin [26787-78-0], ampicillin [69-53-4], and Na benzylpenicillin [69-57-8] and to streptomycin sulfate [3810-74-0], kanamycin sulfate [25389-94-0], gentamicin sulfate [1405-41-0], tobramycin sulfate [49842-07-1], amikacin [37517-28-5], and dibekacin sulfate [58580-55-5]. Amoxycillin was more active than ampicillin and benzylpenicillin against enterococci and was as active as benzylpenicillin and more active than ampicillin against S. bovis and viridans streptococci. The strains of S. bovis and S. viridans were more sensitive to the penicillins than were the enterococci, and amoxycillin demonstrated greater bactericidal activity against the 1st 2 species than against the last. Combinations of amoxycillin and aminoglycosides generally produced greater bactericidal effects than did amoxycillin alone against all 3 species of streptococci unless the organism was resistant to the aminoglycoside. Kanamycin-resistant strains of S. faecalis showed an increased resistance to amikacin in tests of bactericidal activity.
- Effects of gestational age, birth weight, and hypoxemia on pharmacokinetics of amikacin in serum of infants
- Effects of gestational age, birth weight, and hypoxemia on pharmacokinetics of amikacin in serum of infants. Myers, Martin G.; Roberts, Robert J.; Mirhij, Najwa J. (Dep. Pediatr., Univ. Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, USA). Antimicrob. Agents Chemother., 11(6), 1027-32 (English) 1977. CODEN: AMACCQ. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) The serum pharmacokinetics of amikacin (I) [37517-28-5] were studied in 36 infants treated for suspected bacterial infection. A prolonged serum half-life was assocd. with the related variables of birth at an early gestational age, low birth wt., and hypoxemia. A postnatal age effect was not apparent when hypoxemic infants were excluded.
