DOCUMENT TYPE: Conference CA Section: 16 (Fermentation and Bioindustrial Chemistry) Alkene-grown bacteria strains were screened for their ability to produce epoxy alkanes in gas/solid or 2-liq. phase bioreactors. 1,2-Epoxypropane [75-56-9] was more toxic to the strains than was 1,2-epoxybutane [106-88-7] but the strains varied as to their sensitivity. The detn. of specific activities of alkene monooxygenase [63439-50-9] and alkene dehydrogenase indicated that several strains are suitable for either of the bioreactors on this basis. In the gas/solid bioreactor the cosubstrate propionaldehyde [123-38-6] improved the initial activity and stability of epoxyethane [75-21-8]-producing cells. Acetate [64-19-7] had a similar effect on epoxypropane-producing cells. The stereospecificity in the formation of R-1,2-epoxypropane [15448-47-2], R-1,2-epoxybutane [3760-95-0], and S-epichlorohydrin [67843-74-7] by 7 bacterial strains was 88-97, 81-94, and 80-98%, resp. Addnl. engineering aspects applicable to the epoxidn. of alkanes by immobilized biocatalysts in gas/solid and 2-liq. phase bioreactors are also considered. .
