DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 25, 27 In a study related to the synthesis of polyiminoimides, the prepn. of 2-cyanobenzoic acid (I) [3839-22-3] and some derivs. was examd. Conversion of I to cyanobenzoyl chloride (II) [27611-63-8] was readily effected with PCl5. A no. of substituted 2-cyanobenzanilides were prepd. from II and their cyclization to the related 2-substituted-3-iminoisoindolinones studied using DSC. The nature of the substituent appeared to have little influence upon the rate of cyclization, which occurred spontaneously upon melting the parent anilide. The synthesis of mixed dicyanodicarboxylic acids from pyromellitic dianhydride [89-32-7] and from benzophenone 3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride [2421-28-5] was also studied, but difficulties were encountered in resolving the products. .
