DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 25 High-purity 4-(chloroformyl)phthalic anhydride (I) [1204-28-0] is prepd. by treating trimellitic anhydride (II) [552-30-7] with SOCl2 or COCl2, treating the products with H2O, carboxylic acids, carboxylic anhydrides, or org. sulfonic acids to convert any trimellitoyl trichloride (III) [3867-55-8] by-product to I, and fractionally distg. Thus, a mixt. of II 1000, SOCl2 1000, and DMF 5 g was refluxed 6 h and stripped to residual SOCl2 in vacuo to give a product contg. 552-30-7 and 7732-18-5 which are cas registry numbers are also used here. I 93.7, III 3.8, bis(chloroformyl)benzene (IV) 2.2, and other impurities 0.3%. The above product was treated with 15.6 g AcOH [64-19-7] at 110° for 1 h, stripped of volatile materials at 150°/40-60 mm for 30 min, and distd. to give 995 g of I fraction b2 150-155° contg. III 0.3, IV 0.6, and other impurities 0.1%. .
