CLASS: ICM: C07C031-26.Chemicals with cas numbers 73346-74-4 and 3969-84-4 also play role. APPLICATION: CS 82-8152 16 Nov 1982. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 33 (Carbohydrates) Conventional redn. of dialdoses with NaBH4, yielding the title compds., was modified by conditions which prevent contact of the acetals or ketals with acid medium, prevent their decompn., and increase the yields. Thus, NaIO4-oxidized 3,4-O-isopropylidene-D-mannitol (I) was reduced with NaBH4 in an aq. soln. at <10°. From the mixt. Na+ ions were removed in 3 steps with Ostion KM (cation exchanger) in NH4+ cycle with resulting exchange of Na+ by NH4+ which maintained the soln. alk. After each step, the soln. was evapd. to dryness in vacuo to volatilize NH3 and H3BO3 was removed by evapn. with MeOH. The remainder was distd. to give 85.8% 2,3-O-isopropylidene-D-threitol (II), based on I. II can be used in prepn. of complex Rh catalysts for asym. hydrogenation. .
