Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of chemically modified amino acids in silk fibers treated with alkyl glycidyl ethers
Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of chemically modified amino acids in silk fibers treated with alkyl glycidyl ethers. Sakamoto, Munenori; Wakabayashi, Munehiro; Kohara, Natsuko (Fac. Eng., Tokyo Inst. Technol., Tokyo 152, Japan). Sen'i Gakkaishi, 41(4), T156-T163 (Japanese) 1985. CODEN: SENGA5. ISSN: 0037-9875. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 40 (Textiles) In order to identify the reaction products of protein fibers with alkyl glycidyl ethers, amino acids in the hydrolyzates of the silk fibers treated with Me glycidyl ether [930-37-0], Et glycidyl ether [4016-11-9], iso-Pr glycidyl ether [4016-14-2], and allyl glycidyl ether [106-92-3] (MGE, EGE, IPRGE and AGE, resp.) and of wool fibers treated with MGE were analyzed by gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry on an OV-17 column, after conversion to the Bu esters of their N(O)-trifluoroacetyl derivs. The ether linkages of the adducts of alkyl glycidyl ethers with tyrosine residues were cleaved easily in 6 N HCl to give O-(dihydroxypropyl)tyrosine and O-(chlorohydroxypropyl)tyrosine. These 2 were the only identified products when hydrolysis was carried out at 110° for 24 h. The adducts of MGE, EGE, and IPRE with tyrosine were identified in the hydrolyzates of the corresponding samples when hydrolysis was carried out at 100° for a shorter time. However, the adduct of AGE with tyrosine was not detected even when hydrolysis was carried out under such mild conditions. Ne-(Dihydroxypropyl)-Ne-(hydroxymethoxypropyl)lysine, an intermediate for conversion of Ne,Ne-bis(hydroxymethoxypropyl)lysine [(MGE)2-Lys] into Ne,Ne-bis(dihydroxypropyl)ysine (G2-Lys) during hydrolysis, was identified in the hydrolyzate of MGE-treated wool, which was obtained under mild conditions, in addn. to (MGE)2-Lys, G2-Lys and Ne-(hydroxymethoxypropyl)lysine.

Chang, Hui-Ting; Chang, Shang-Tzen (School of Forestry and Resource Conservation, National Taiwan University, Taichung, Peop. Rep. China). Bioresource Technology, 97(11), 1265-1271 (English) 2006 Elsevier B.V. CODEN: BIRTEB. ISSN: 0960-8524. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 43 (Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products) Section cross-reference(s): 10 China fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata var. lanceolata) and maple (Acer sp.) wood were etherified with iso-Pr glycidyl ether and the decay resistance and light stability of the modified wood were assessed. CP/MAS 13C NMR and FT-IR analyses indicated that new ether bonds contg. iso-Pr groups formed after reacting wood with iso-Pr glycidyl ether. Modified wood samples were very resistant to decay when exposed to brown-rot fungus Laetiporus sulphureus or white-rot fungus Lenzites betulina for 60 days in the soil-block test. The iso-Pr glycidyl ether treatment of wood was effective in decreasing formation of phenoxyl radicals upon UV irradn. and thus protecting wood from photodiscoloration. .
