Seasonal cycle of polychlorinated biphenyls in the waters of the catchment basin of the River Seine (France)
Seasonal cycle of polychlorinated biphenyls in the waters of the catchment basin of the River Seine (France). Chevreuil, M.; Granier, L. (Inst. Hydrol. Climatol., Univ. Paris VI, Paris 75252, Fr.). Water, Air, Soil Pollut., 59(3-4), 217-29 (English) 1991. CODEN: WAPLAC. ISSN: 0049-6979. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 61 (Water) In an attempt to explain the origin of PCB pollution peaks exceeding 1000 ng/L in the Seine River,France, their concns. was studied in relation to the flow rate and the solid load. Longitudinal profiles of the Seine River and 2 of its tributaries, the Marne and the Orge, show that the PCB concn. in these rivers follows a seasonal rhythm, depending on how much leaching occurs. Leaching is the main cause of the concns. >200 ng/L obsd. 40186-72-9 and 42740-50-1 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. at high water, both in rural and urban zones. When investigating floods in the sewer network and the rivers, the PCB concns. usually follow the flow rate. PCB and suspended matter concns. vary in the same way during flood time, though when comparing the distribution of PCBs in the aq. phase and the solid load, scarcely any connection is seen between PCB transport and the solid load. Thus during flood time in the Seine at Paris, PCB transport remains under the control of the sol. phase (75%). A link between the hydrol. conditions and the PCB spectrum in the river water could not be established. .
Organochlorines affect the major androgenic hormone, testosterone, in male polar bears (Ursus maritimus) at Svalbard
Organochlorines affect the major androgenic hormone, testosterone, in male polar bears (Ursus maritimus) at Svalbard. Oskam, Irma C.; Ropstad, Erik; Dahl, Ellen; Lie, Elisabeth; Derocher, Andrew E.; Wiig, Oystein; Larsen, Stig; Wiger, Richard; Skaare, Janneche Utne (Department of Reproduction and Forensic Medicine, Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, Oslo, Norway). Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part A, 66(22), 2119-2139 (English) 2003 Taylor & Francis, Inc. CODEN: JTEHF8. ISSN: 1528-7394. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Normal sexual development and subsequent reproductive function are dependent on appropriate testosterone prodn. and action. The regulation of steroid hormones, including androgens, can be influenced by both biol. and environmental factors, including environmental chems. Concns. of organochlorines are considerably greater in Svalbard polar bears than in polar bears from other regions. Between 1995 and 1998, samples were collected from 121 male polar bears (U. maritimus) from the Svalbard area. In this study, testosterone concn.Several substances with their cas registry numbers 40186-72-9 and 27304-13-8 may be metioned in this study. variations were described for male polar bears during different seasons and for all age groups. To study possible relationships between plasma testosterone concns. and biol. factors, such as age, axial girth, and extractable plasma fat, and organochlorine contaminants including hexachlorocyclohexanes, hexachlorobenzene, chlordanes, p,p'-DDE, and 16 individual polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, identical statistical analyses were performed on the total population and a subsample of reproductively active adults. Of the biol. factors, axial girth showed a significant pos. relationship and percentage extractable fat and a significant neg. relationship with the testosterone concns. Both the Spesticides and SPCBs made significant neg. contributions to the variation of the plasma testosterone concn. The continuous presence of high concns. of organochlorines in male polar bears throughout their life could possibly aggravate any reproductive toxicity that may have occurred during fetal and early postnatal development. .
