DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Mammalian Hormones) Surgical removal of the preovulatory follicle in mares delayed the onset of the next ovulation to 14.6 days, compared with 2.5 days in anesthetized, nonoperated controls. The time to ovulation after fluprostenol was similar in animals with both ovaries intact. The injection of fluprostenol [40666-16-8] (125 mg, i.m.) led to ovulation in 12.8 days when the ovary without the corpus luteum was removed, despite a large and prolonged increase of plasma FSH [9002-68-0] which occurred in hemiovariectomized mares. The interval to ovulation after fluprostenol was the same as after preovulatory follicle ablation. Thus, follicles grow to a similar stage of development in the presence of an early active corpus luteum; recruitment of the follicle for ovulation occurs 12-14 days prior to ovulation; the time course of ovulation is not affected by limiting follicle growth to one ovary; and the time course and ovulation rate are not altered by high FSH levels.
