CLASS: IC: D01F009-00; D01F002-00. ICA: D01F009-14. APPLICATION: JP 83-49693 26 Mar 1983. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 40 (Textiles) Section cross-reference(s): 43 Wood is plasticized by partially or completely substituting OH groups, dissolved in an org. solvent, spun into air through a spinneret, and drawn 10-100% at room temp. or by heating to give yarn with high tensile strength. Thus, trifluoroacetic anhydride [407-25-0] and AcOH were mixed with radiata pine refiner ground pulp, and after 2 h the mixt. was dispersed in MeOH and dried to give modified wood (substitution molarity 1.26). A CHCl3 soln. of the wood was spun through a spinneret, dried, and drawn 135% at 190° to give yarn having tensile strength 8.6 kg/mm2 and elongation 3.5%.
- Comparative investigations in esterification of cellulose obtained with acetic and trifluoroacetic anhydrides
- Comparative investigations in esterification of cellulose obtained with acetic and trifluoroacetic anhydrides. Abdel Mohdy, F. A.; Khalil, M. I.; Hebeish, A. (Text. Res. Div., Natl. Res. Cent., Cairo, Egypt). Cellul. Chem. Technol., 17(6), 569-73 (English) 1983. CODEN: CECTAH. ISSN: 0576-9787. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 40 (Textiles) Fibrous esterification of cotton cellulose with trifluoroacetic anhydride (I) [407-25-0] was investigated under a variety of conditions and compared with fibrous esterification of cotton using acetic anhydride (II) [108-24-7]. In both cases the extent of the esterification reaction was dependent upon the concn. of the acid anhydride, as well as reaction time and temp. Increasing the concn. of II from 10 to 90% caused a significant enhancement in the extent of the esterification reaction. The same holds true for I, although the extent of reaction tends to decrease with increasing I concn. beyond 50%. The extent of esterification reaction in the case of II was significantly higher than that found with I. Rate of esterification obtained with the latter was also significantly lower than those with II. Raising the temp. of esterification reaction from 20° to 60° was accompanied by a significant increment in the extent of the reaction in the case of II. This is not the case with I; the extent of the reaction increased with increasing temp. up to 40°, but then decreased substantially with further temp. increase. Higher reactivity of II compared with I is believed to account for the lower extent of reaction obtained with the latter, whereas partial dissocn. of the esterified cotton in trifluoroacetic acid and/or I accounts for the decrease in the extent of the reaction at higher I concn. or higher temps.
