II was dissolved in MeOH at 60°, treated with PhCHO [100-52-7], and mixed with AcOH in MeOH to give (PhCH:NNHCOCH2CH2)2S (III) [5457-16-9]. III (5 parts) was used with 2 parts Irganox 1010 [6683-19-8] as antioxidant for ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer [24937-78-8]. .

RSRCOOH (I) (R = C1-8 divalent hydrocarbon radical); (b) dithiobis(alkanoic acid) compd. R1O2CR(S)nRCO2R1 (II) (R1 is H or C1-4 alkyl radical; n = 1, 2, or 3); (c) 31 alkali or alk. earth metal hydroxides, 0.1-5.0%; and (d) water-sol. surfactant, 0.1-5.0%. The cleaning solns. contain 0.25-10% of I and/or II, and are less effective on Cu and brass. Thus, an aq. soln. for cleaning of steel in 1 min at 90-190° F contained II as di-Me 3,3'-dithiodipropionate [15441-06-2] 2, Triton X-202 [37189-42-7] surfactant 1, and NaOH 1%. Without II the steel surface was not cleaned. The cleaning of Cu was only partial in 3-5 min. A similar soln. with I as 3,3-thiobis(methylpropionate) [4131-74-2] was less effective than the II-contg. soln., and cleaned the steel in 1-5 min.
