DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) The polymn. of styrene oxide [96-09-3] by nitronium tetrafluoroborate [13826-86-3] in MeNO2 and CH2Cl2 at 5, 20, and 50° was investigated. GPC analyses of the products combined with an l isocyanate method showed that both cyclic and linear oligomers were formed. In MeNO2 the cyclic dimer and trimer were 2-benzyl-4-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane [4362-20-3] and 1,3,5-tribenzyltrioxane [77550-10-8], resp. 96-09-3 which is the cas registry number of one of substances is just one of reagents here. In CH2Cl2 2,5-diphenyldioxane [4141-38-2] was isolated. In MeNa2, mainly isomerized structures with acetal linkage were produced, while in CH2Cl2 isomerization did not proceed. By NMR and IR spectra the presence of C:O and OH end groups in the linear oligomers was shown. There were indications that oligomers formed both directly from the monomer and by degrdn. of the polymer. .
