DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 42 (Coatings, Inks, and Related Products) Powder coating compns. of blends of (a) vinyl chloride copolymers having pendant OH groups, (b) crosslinker, and (c) cellulose acetate butyrate (I) [9004-36-8] were prepd. and applied to a substrate and cured to form smooth, uniform coatings; the compns. can also contain certain blocked catalysts for improved cure. Thus, a blend was prepd. from :80 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate-vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer [41618-91-1] 100, TiO2 50, hexamethoxymethylmelamine [3089-11-0] 5, 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl 3,4-epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate [2386-87-0] 5, Thermolite 31 Super stabilizer 3, ethyl acrylate-2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer [26376-86-3], and I 15 parts. This blend was compounded in an extruder at 115-30° and pelletized; the pellets were pulverized at -150° to a fine particle powder coating compn. The compn. was applied electrostatically to steel panels and cured at 204° for 3 min to give a smooth, uniform film of excellent adhesion, good leveling flow, and a 60° gloss rating 87; the powder remained free flowing after standing for 24 h at 40°. In the absence of I, a similar coating had only fair leveling flow and a 60° gloss of 72.
