DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 43 (Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products) X-ray diffraction diagrams of cellulose (I) [9004-34-6] from Acetobacter xylinum cultures incubated in the presence of Kayaphor FB [4,4'-bis[4-anilino-6-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino-s-triazin-2-ylamino]-2,2'-st ilbenedisulfonic acid] [4193-55-9] clearly show that the I chains, when they are extruded from the cell, already maintain a specific correlation with each other. The intensity of diffraction of the (110) plane becomes very weak and the diffraction of the (110) plane disappears because the space between (110) planes expands in the a axis direction by inclusion of the brightener. A new diffraction not corresponding to cellulose I or cellulose II occurs. It is suggested that in the cross-section of the nascent fibril the cellulose chains are in the form of monomol. layers corresponding to the (110) plane of cellulose I.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 43 (Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products) Section cross-reference(s): 75 The x-ray diffraction at 2q = 8.6° from cellulose [9004-34-6] prepd. by incubation of A. xylinium cells in the presence of the fluoroescent brightener Kayaphor FB (I) [4193-55-9] corresponds to the (110) plane of the Kayaphor FB complex. The lattice consts. for the unit cell of the complex are a 15.6 ?, b 8.0 ?, and g 129.2°. After extn. of Kayaphor FB, the sample shows the x-ray diffraction pattern of cellulose I. This was explained by Kayaphor FB being included between the (110) planes of the complex, rather than the (020) planes as suggested by R. M. Brown et al. (1983). Cellulose chains are extruded from bacterial cells in the form of monomol. layers corresponding to the (110) plane of cellulose I, which are stacks of ~10 chains. The nascent fibril is composed of cellulose sheets which include H2O and medium agents.
