The use of synthetic detergents (LAS [42615-29-2] in this study) and soap would not diminish the performance of activated sludge and submerged filter plants if the BOD loading were well-regulated. Without BOD loading regulation after the area-wide use of soaps, activated sludge plants may fail in operation due to sludge bulking. A soap concn. double that estd. in domestic wastewater for soap use throughout the district damaged the performance of the submerged filter plant, whereas LAS showed no detrimental effects at 5 times that obsd. in domestic wastewater. In addn., the increase in BOD influent concn. assocd. with soaps would require expansion of aeration tank capacity to regulate BOD loadings to the plant within appropriate limits.

At 5.degree., the rate was slow. At 45.degree., there was a difficulty in acclimitization of a stable microbial population capable of degrading LAS. Acclimization of the sewage seed to incubation temp. and to LAS increased the rate of biodegrdn. Acclimization to LAS was more important as a factor in increasing the rate than was acclimization to temp. alone. .
