DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Flexible, elec. active polymers are prepd. by doping heterocyclic polymers [contg. tricyclic (6:6:6) rings with 2 heteroatoms in the central ring] with agents modifying acceptor cond. This, stirring 0.5 g 10-methylphenothiazine-2,8-dicarboxylic acid, 0.216 g hydrazine sulfate, and 10 mL polyphosphoric acid at 100° for 48 h gave 0.51 g poly([10-methylphenothiazine-2,8-diyl)(1,3,4-oxadiazole-2,5-diyl)] (I) [91777-84-3]. A film of I cast on a Pt wire from a 5% polyphosphoric acid soln. and then dipped in a 0.1M MeCN soln. of Et4N+BF4- [429-06-1] became elec. active when subjected to a potential of +0.65 V in the presence of an electrolyte providing charge-compensating ions.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 76 Flexible polymers with reversible elec. activity contain tricyclic (5:6:5) heterocyclic units contg. 2 heteroatoms (N, O, S, Se, Te) in each 5-membered ring and sufficient ionic doping agent for charge compensation. Thus, heating a stirred mixt. of 4,6-diaminoresorcinol [15791-87-4] (prepd. by nitration of resorcinol diacetate [108-58-7] and hydrogenation) 1.562, terephthalic acid 1.2258 and polyphosphoric acid 128 g for 2 h at room temp., 16 h at 55°, 3 h each at 70, 95, 130, 150, 170, and 185°, and 16 h at 200° gave poly[benzo[1,2-d:5,4-d']bisoxazole-2,6-diyl]-p-phenylene] (I) [60871-72-9] with intrinsic viscosity (MeSO3H, 30°) 1.7 kL/g. A Pt wire coated with I from a 2.5% soln. in MeSO3H and dipped in a 0.1 M MeCN soln. of Et4N+ BF4- [429-06-1] became neg. charged and was made elec. active by application of a voltage of -2.1 V in the presence of an electrolyte supplying charge-compensating, doping ions.
