ISSN: 0361-8773. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 42 (Coatings, Inks, and Related Products) Section cross-reference(s): 43 Aliph. and arom. acrylated urethane and epoxy oligomers were compared as finishes for oak and redwood flooring and particleboard on the basis of chem. resistance, abrasion resistance, curing rate, hardness, mech. properties, and light stability. The acrylated epoxy oligomers generally had greater solvent resistance, cure speed, hardness, and tensile strength. A medium-mol.-wt. oligomer with high crosslink d. provided the best abrasion resistance. Coatings crosslinked with trimethylolpropane triacrylate [15625-89-5] had higher abrasion resistance than those using tripropylene glycol diacrylate [42978-66-5], and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone [88-12-0] reactive diluent provided coatings with higher abrasion resistance than those using ethoxyethoxyethyl acrylate [7328-17-8]. Aliph. oligomers provided coatings with better abrasion resistance and light stability than the arom. oligomers. A suggested starting formula was presented along with film properties for the best performing oligomers from the three substrates.

PRIORITY: NL 83-685 24 Feb 1983. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 38 (Plastics Fabrication and Uses) An optically readable information disk having a carrier body of polycarborate, which on 1 side has an optically readable information track which is provided in the surface of the carrier body and which is covered with a reflection layer, comprises an envelope of a crosslinked transparent synthetic resin extending as a closed envelope over the information track with reflection layer present on the upper side of the disk, over the edge of the disk, and over the lower side of the disk. Thus, an envelope was prepd. by rotating a disk in a vertical position in a crosslinkable liq. compn. contg. a urethane acrylate 24, an epoxy acrylate 16, tripropylene glycol diacrylate [42978-66-5] 54, benzoin iso-Bu ether 4, and silicone resin (65% soln. in xylene) 2%. After at least 1 complete rotation, the disk was removed from the liq. and centrifuged at 1500 rpm, with the excess liq. being flung away. The disk was exposed to UV light on both sides and at the edge so that the liq. was cured and an envelope of crosslinked synthetic resin was formed.
