NaHCO3 gave 22-53% yield of the corresponding 2,4-HO(RO)C6H3CHO, which condensed with 4-H2NC6H4C6H4CN-4 in refluxing abs. EtOH to give 67-91% 2,4-HO(RO)C6H3CH:NC6H4(C6H4CN-4)-4 (I; R = C2-C9 n-alkyl). All 8 I formed smectic and nematic liq.-cryst. phases, and their characteristic yellow fluoresence indicated intramol. H bonding. .
