The potentiometric titrn. and the IR spectra showed that PDTA acts as a tridentate ligand. The pptn. of barium bromate, a water-sol. compd., is brought about by a gradual change in the compn. of the solvent media. An org. compd., such as methanol or THF, is allowed to diffuse into the original water soln., thus slowly converting the soln. into a water-org. mixt. Strontium bromate is .apprx.40 times more sol. in water than barium bromate. The increased soly. plus the greater stability of the strontium MEDTA (1,2-diaminopropanetetraacetic acid) chelate tends to hold the strontium in soln. The chief advantage of this method over the pptn. of barium chromate is in the prepn. of barium compds.In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 4408-81-5 and 67-56-1 Usually barium must be sepd. from the chromate before proceeding. However, barium bromate can be easily converted to the oxide, eliminating this sepn. step. .
