DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 62 (Essential Oils and Cosmetics) Gas chromatog. of juniper (Juniperus communis) oil showed at least 40 components (monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes) identified by mass spectra. The largest fraction of the oil consisted of 10 monoterpene hydrocarbons (60.3%) of which a-pinene [80-56-8] (33.6%), b-myrcene [123-35-3] (11.0%), sabinene [3387-41-5] (7.6%), limonene [138-86-3] (3.1%) and b-pinene [127-91-3] (2.5%) were present in greater quantities. The minor monoterpenes were 4-thujanol [546-79-2] (0.9%), 4-terpinenol [562-74-3] (2.1%), a-terpineol [98-55-5] (0.2%), campholene aldehyde [4501-58-0] (0.2%), verbenone [80-57-9] (0.2%) and bornyl acetate [76-49-3] (0.4%). The latter 2 compds. were found for the 1st time in juniper oil.

II was the product of a Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement, followed by a bond cleavage. Dehydration of I with ZnBr2 also gave (-)-6-endo-bromoisoborneol. I 3-acetate underwent similar dehydration reactions, but not the bond cleavage reaction. .
