The first involves condensation of a bifunctional tertiary amine with slightly more than its molar equiv. of 1,4-dihalo-2-butene. The nonreacted dihalo compd. is extd. and the amt. of monofunctional tertiary amine required to react with the end halogens of the quaternary polymer is added. Thus, 1,4-bis(dimethylamino)-2-butene [4559-79-9] (0.3 mol) was reacted with 1,4-dichloro-2-butene [764-41-0] (0.4 mol) and subsequently with octyldimethylamine [7378-99-6] to form a polymeric product which, at 50 ppm, completely inhibited Aerobacter aerogenes within 3 h. According to another procedure, a mixt. of mono- and difunctional amines is reacted with an equimolar amt. of 1,4-dihalo-2-butene. By the latter method, 0.2 mol 1,4-bis(dimethylamino)-2-butene, 0.01 mol triethanolamine [102-71-6] and 0.205 mol 1,4-dichloro-2-butene gave a polymer whose min. inhibitory concn. against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus faecalis was 50 ppm. The polymeric quaternary amines are useful in hair-conditioning products.
