DOCUMENT TYPE: Conference CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Humans given hydrophilic dietary fibers (lactulose [4618-18-2] 45 g/day) for 4 wk showed no effect of the fiber on serum cholesterol [57-88-5] or high-d. cholesterol. 9000-30-0 and 9000-69-5 which are cas registry numbers of chemicals are mentioned. In another expt., dietary bran and Plantago ovata gave <5% decreases in serum cholesterol when given at 15 g/day for 2 wk, and pectin [9000-69-5] and guar gum [9000-30-0] gave 5-10% decreases. These last 4 fibers gave 10-25% decreases in serum cholesterol when given along with metronidazole (1.2 g/day), an inhibitor of intestinal bacteria. This indicates that the activity of dietary fiber is only obsd. when it is present as an intact gel, and the hypocholesteremic effects are eliminated when the fiber gel is destroyed by intestinal bacteria. .
