(Rs = 1.0) by polar-bonded-phase HPLC on a cyanopropyl column with Me2CO-hexane as the eluent. Esterification of these components with 3,2-dinitrobenzoyl chloride [99-33-2] produces derivs. which are, however, completely resolved (Rs > 2) by the normal-phase HPLC on silica; derivatization has the added advantage of introducing an UV-absorbing chromophore into each component. Preparative scale chromatog. is used to isolate each of the derivs., which are characterized by their UV, NMR and mass spectra. These esters are used as ref. std. for an anal. method based on derivatization and normal-phase chromatog. In this way a sample of glycerol formal is calibrated for use as a std. in the direct detn. of the two components by polar-bonded-phase HPLC.
