(F. nitida ROXB.) bark (Japanese name: Teriha-Zansho), Rutaceae, which was collected in the area of Ping-Tung Hsien, were examd. Twelve alkaloids, nitidine (I) [6872-57-7], oxynitidine [548-31-2], 6-methoxy-5,7-dihydrochelerythrine [49702-49-0], oxychelerythrine [28342-33-8], des-N-methylchelerythrine (II) [6900-99-8], chelerythrine [34316-15-9], arnottianamide [60394-88-9], liriodenine [475-75-2], bocconoline [32906-88-0], decarine [54354-62-0], integriamide [72459-16-6], and isoarnottianamide [60394-91-4], and 3 lignans l-asarinin [133-04-0], l-sesamin [13079-95-3], and l-syringaresinol [6216-82-6], a coumarin, aesculetin di-Me ether [120-08-1], together with b-sitosterol [83-46-5] were isolated. Other than the above 17 known compds. a new phenolic benzo[c]phenanthridone alkaloid designated as oxyterihanine (III) [95066-54-9] was also isolated as a minor component. While the past 3 groups reported that nitidine was a sole quaternary benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloid in the same plants collected in the areas of Hong-Kong and of China mainland (Gauanx and Gauantung), II was isolated as a major component. I was isolated from the plant collected in Mar. as a second component, but I was essentially a sole benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloid in the case of the plant collected in July and Sept. The seasonal variation of the contents of the quaternary benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids is discussed.

Dehydroglaucine [22212-26-6] and liriodenine (I) [475-75-2] were isolated. I and I.MeI [55974-07-7] showed in vitro antimicrobial activity comparable to that of streptomycin sulfate and amphotericin B. Dehydroglaucine had a similar spectrum of activity to I and I.MeI but was not as potent. Oxoglaucine methiodide [55974-08-8], prepd. by oxidn. of glaucine [475-81-0] and treatment with MeI, had similar activity to dehydroglaucine but is particularly active against Candida albicans.
