The toxicity of naphthalene [91-20-3] and 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene derivs. on growth of A. quadruplicatum strain PR-6 was investigated using the algal lawn technique. Phenols and quinone derivs. of naphthalene and methylnaphthalene inhibited the growth and were toxic to the cyanobacterium. In contrast, alkyl side chain hydroxylation products, such as the hydroxymethyl deriv. of 1-methylnaphthalene and I and 1- and 2-naphthoic acids, did not inhibit growth. Thus, cyanobacteria preferentially oxidize the Me group of 1-methylnaphthalene and I to hydroxymethyl compds. which are less toxic to the cyanobacterium than the parent hydrocarbons or their ring hydroxylated derivs.
