Av. daily intakes (±SE) of coumestans for ewes fed diets A and B were 952 ± 30 and 514 ± 1 mg, resp. There was no change in the concn. of free coumestrol in the plasma during the period of feeding of the 2 diets, except for the last day when the diets were interchanged. The concn. of free coumestrol appeared to be related to the amt. of coumestans ingested, 81 vs. 37 ng/10 mL plasma for ewes fed diets A and B, resp. The effects of length of feeding and diet on the concn. of conjugated coumestrol were less well defined but showed similar trends. Despite the significant amts. of coumestrol in the plasma after 16 days of feeding the 2 diets, the prodn. of cervical mucus remained at basal levels. For the cervical mucus bioassay, ewes become refractory to coumestrol over prolonged periods of exposure.

Lucerne meal mixed with basal ration was used as a source of I. Diethylstilbestrol (II) was used as a std. Mean litter size (MLS), mean litter wt. (MLW), mean young wt. (MYW), mean young born alive (MYA), and mean young born dead were the parameters measured. Consumption of 210, 512, or 832 mg I and 1.00 mg II by each animal during a period of 20 days did not cause any change in fertility, whereas 20 mg I and 1.6 mg II/animal decreased the MLW. A level of 40 mg I decreased the MLS and MYA. MLW was also slightly decreased resulting in an over all decrease in fertility in multiparous female mice.
