The anal. is based on the fact that the I metabolite, chloral hydrate, as well as unmetabolized I produce a blue color upon the addn. of quinaldine ethiodide, which can be measured in a spectrophotometer at 605 nm wavelength. The precision and accuracy of the method were detd. by anal. of serum samples contg. 5-30 mg I/mL.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The effects (immediate and residual) of 2 hypnotics, chlormethiazole [533-45-9] and dichloralphenazone [480-30-8] on psychomotor function and the pharmacokinetics of these drugs were studied in young and elderly healthy volunteers. The elderly were more sensitive than the young to equal doses of chlormethiazole and the difference was not due to higher plasma levels of the drug. The differences detected were short-lived and may indicate a redn. in the ability of the aging brain to adapt to the effects of the drug. Dichloralphenazone in hypnotic doses produced comparatively little deterioration in psychomotor function in either age group.
