DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 36 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) The title method was used to monitor the rate of 2,2-bis[4-(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropoxy)-phenyl]propane (I) [4809-35-2] formation during the 1st stage of epoxy resin synthesis from epichlorohydrin [106-89-8] and diphenylolpropane [80-05-7]. The method involved the detn. of the relative total internal reflected light intensty (D1040/D1520) at the sample-IR spectrometer crystal interface. As the reaction proceeded D1040 (light intensity of the ether bonds) increased proportionally to I concn. and D1520 (light intensity of the benzene rings) remained const. The title method gave more accurate results than the direct detn. of the D1040/D1520 changes of the transmitted light. This was due to the turbidity of the reaction mixt. .
