DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Isobergapten [482-48-4], pimpinellin [131-12-4], bergapten (I) [484-20-8], isopimpinellin [482-27-9], and sphondin [483-66-9] were isolated from a prepurified ext. of Heracleum sphondylium roots using 2 different techniques, namely, CLC and SCLC. The former technique was carried out with 4 plates, whereas the latter method required only 1 plate, using the same mobile phase in each case. A further advantage of the SCLC method was that all completely sepd. compds. could be quickly and efficiently eluted in small vols. of MeOH.

Compds. identified included umbelliferone, sphondin, bergapten, isobergapten, pimpinellin, and angelicin. During the salting (preserving) of the stalks of these species there was a sharp diminution of the amts. of several of the coumarins; of the compds. present in the fresh stalks, only angelicin remained in relatively substantial amt. .
