Ce(III) was regenerated to Ce(IV) by electrolysis in a diaphragm cell. 95-47-6 and 4839-46-7 which are cas registry numbers are also used here. When the intermediates reacted much slower than the initial substrate, oxidn. was carried out in the anodic space of the electrolyzer. Thus, for instance, cyclohexane-1,3-dione and dimedone were oxidized to 3,3-dimethylglutaric acid (95% yield) at 50° and in 0.3 mol/dm3 Ce(ClO4)4 in 2.5 mol/dm3 HClO4. In the case of comparable oxidn. rates, oxidn. was carried out outside the electrolyzer, at an excess of the initial substrate. In this way xylenes in 5-fold excess were oxidized to tolylaldehydes (yield 80%). The spent soln. contg. Ce(III) was then electroregenerated. .
