For the former 2 compds. the excitation and emission wavelengths were 330 and 424 nm, resp., for bergamottin 272 and 520 mm, resp. Bergamottin had to be detd. in solns. of the residue after evapn. of the oil, in order to avoid interfering volatiles and was measured by the fluorescence quenching of the indicator present in the silica gel. In 20 samples of oil, the ranges and mean values of the compds. were, resp.: I, 0.06-0.18, 0.12; 7-methoxy-5-geranoxycoumarin, 0.15-0.30, 0.20; bergamottin, 0.20-0.39, 0.27%. The method may be useful for detecting adulteration.
