The water content of these copolymer films is strongly dependent on the amt. of hydroxyalkyl groups. The copolymer film contg. 70% hydroxyalkyl groups shows a water content of 53%, and the a-helical conformation of this copolymer is partially broken by strong hydration. Consequently, these swollen film are permeable to water as well as to Na+ and K+ ions to a considerable extent. The copolymer film contg. 50% hydroxyalkyl groups shows a water content as low as 10%, and the a-helical conformation is maintained in the hydrated state of this copolymer film. In this case, a partially disordered region is not formed; therefore, the permeation of water and ions is strongly depressed. .
