Alk. hydrolysis was employed to release aglycons from sol. phenolic esters (2N NaOH) and residue (4N NaOH). The Me3Si derivs. of the released phenolic acids were quantitated by capillary gas chromatog. on a 0.2 mm i.d. ′ 25 m fused silica column coated with OV-1 with flame ionization detection within an elution time of 20 min. Greater precision was achieved by using Me heptadecanoate instead of n-tetracosane as the internal std. Although operations were conducted in the dark under N, recoveries of p-hydroxybenzoic [99-96-7], vanillic [121-34-6], and syringic [530-57-4] acids exceeded 90%, but those of p-coumaric [501-98-4], ferulic [537-98-4], and sinapic acids were 87, 82, and 78%, resp., and that of caffeic acid [501-16-6] was only 17%. .
