- Response of lettuce, sown normally or in carbon pellets, to various herbicides, preemergence. Richardson, W. G.; Jones, A. G. (Agric. Res. Counc. Weed Res. Organ., Begbroke Hill/Yarnton/Oxford OX5 1PF, UK). Tests Agrochem. Cultiv., 4, 106-7 (English) 1983. CODEN: TACUDC. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Pelletization of lettuce seeds with carbon protected the seeds from the damage from herbicides. The vigor and fresh wt. of lettuce raised from pelleted seeds and treated with asulam [3337-71-1] (0.5; 2 kg/ha), AC 222293 [81405-85-8] (0.75; 1.5 kg/ha), propachlor [1918-16-7] (2; 4 kg/ha), 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid [1702-17-6], acifluorfen [50594-66-6] (0.15; 0.3 kg/ha), simazine [122-34-9] (0.14; 0.28 kg/ha), aziprotryne [4658-28-0] (0.4; 0.8 kg/ha), and diuron [330-54-1] (0.2; 0.4 kg/ha) were higher than that of plants raised from normal seeds. Best protection was obtained with asulam and AC 222293.

- Rhythmical changes in the sensitivity of cotton seedlings to herbicides. Rikin, Arnon; St. John, Judith B.; Wergin, William P.; Anderson, James D. (Plant Horm. Lab., Beltsville Agric. Res. Cent., Beltsville, MD 20705, USA). Plant Physiol., 76(2), 297-300 (English) 1984. CODEN: PLPHAY. ISSN: 0032-0889. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) seedlings that were grown under a photoperiod of 12 h darkness and 12 h light showed oscillations in their sensitivity to the herbicides acifluorfen [50594-66-6], fluazifop [69335-91-7], and bentazon [25057-89-0]. Sensitivity was expressed in appearance of necrotic areas on the cotyledons and in decreased growth of the shoot. The seedlings were least sensitive in the beginning and middle of the light period, then the sensitivity increased and reached its max. during the beginning and middle of the dark period and then declined. Seedlings grown from germination under continuous light exhibited very small or no oscillations in sensitivity. The oscillations in sensitivity were entrained by 1 cycle of darkness and light. A cycle of 12 h darkness and 12 h light triggered the greatest oscillations, whereas either increasing or decreasing the duration of the dark period resulted in smaller oscillations. Apparently, these oscillations in sensitivity to herbicides were endogenously controlled since after entrainment they continued irresp. of the light conditions.
