Nitrification inhibition by nitrapyrin and volatile sulfur compounds
Nitrification inhibition by nitrapyrin and volatile sulfur compounds. Maddux, L. D.; Kissel, D. E.; Ball, J. D.; Raney, R. J. (Dep. Agron., Kansas State Univ., Manhattan, KS 66506, USA). Soil Sci. Soc. Am. J., 49(1), 239-42 (English) 1985. CODEN: SSSJD4. ISSN: 0361-5995. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 19 (Fertilizers, Soils, and Plant Nutrition) Field studies were conducted on irrigated corn (Zea mays) in 1978 and 1979 to evaluate inhibition of nitrification by CS2 at 5.6, 11, and 22 kg/ha, Na trithiocarbonate (STC) at 11 and 22 kg/ha, ammonium dithiocarbamate (ADTC) [513-74-6] at 11 and 22 kg/ha, and potassium Et xanthate (KEtX) [140-89-6] at 5.6 and 11 kg/ha as compared to nitrapyrin (2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl)-pyridine) [1929-82-4] at 5.6 kg/ha. Anhyd. NH3 was knifed 15 to 20 cm deep on 60 cm spacings at rates of 84, 168, and 252 kg N/ha. All materials were evaluated on a Eudora fine sandy loam (Fluventic Hapludoll, coarse, silty mesic) in 1979 and CS2 and STC were evaluated on the same soil in 1978 and on 2 addnl. soils in 1979: a Pratt loamy fine sand (Psammentic Haplustalf, sandy, mixed, mesic) and a Crete silty loam (Pachic Argiustoll, fine, montmorillonitic, mesic). The performance of STC and CS2 in 197 and 1979 indicated that these materials were not effective in inhibiting nitrification under the conditions that existed at the locations where they were applied. ADTC and KEtX were not effective inhibitors of nitrification, although they were only tested at 1 location in 1979. Nitrapyrin was effective in inhibiting nitrification in all studies, however, it resulted in an increase in corn yield only one in fall N application on the Pratt loamy fine sand. The lack of yield response was attributed to the absence of conditions conducive for losses of nitrate-N.
Uptake of nickel(II) by human peripheral mononuclear leukocytes
Uptake of nickel(II) by human peripheral mononuclear leukocytes. Menon, C. Rajeshwari; Nieboer, Evert (Dep. Biochem., McMaster Univ., Hamilton, ON, Can.). J. Inorg. Biochem., 28(2-3), 217-25 (English) 1986. CODEN: JIBIDJ. ISSN: 0162-0134. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Dithiocarbamate-mediated Ni(II) uptake by human peripheral mononuclear leukocytes (mostly lymphocytes) was examd. The lipophilic ligands diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) [147-84-2] and ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate [5108-96-3] enhanced the cellular assocn. of Ni(II), while ammonium dithiocarbamate [513-74-6] had no effect. Sequential incubations [ligand first followed by Ni(II)] and concurrent expts. (simultaneous exposure) yielded similar results. Cell fractionation studies showed that DDC promoted cytosolic accumulation of Ni(II), rather than in the residual cell pellet. The observations reported are interpreted in terms of the equil. model of metal-ion uptake by cells proposed by R. J. P. Williams (1985). Although Ni(II) transformed lymphocytes in vitro from an individual with dermal manifestation of Ni sensitivity to lymphoblasts, there was no apparent difference in Ni(II) uptake capacity over lymphocytes from nonsensitized controls.
