DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Rats were fed 8 or 18% casein diets with or without vitamin B12 [68-19-9]. Growth of the vitamin B12-deprived rats was retarded, and red blood cell, Hb, and hematocrit values of peripheral blood were decreased. The content of vitamin B12 in liver and plasma of vitamin B12-deficient rats was depressed. These changes were not affected by dietary protein level. 16009-13-5 and 68-19-9 which are cas registry numbers of chemicals are mentioned. Methylmalonic acid (MMA) [516-05-2] excretion in urine of rats was increased markedly in vitamin B12 deficiency. In rats fed the 18% casein diet, excretion of MMA was obsd. earlier, and the content of MMA in urine was higher than that on the 8% casein diet. Incorporation of 14C-labeled glycine [56-40-6] into hemin [16009-13-5] of bone marrow of rats in both casein diet groups was depressed ~67% by vitamin B12 deficiency compared with vitamin B12-supplemented rats. These results suggested that vitamin B12 affected the heme synthesis in bone marrow of rats. .
