The rate in the presence of Ph3CH [519-73-3] is about the same as in II. In the presence of a perfluoropolyether, the rate of reaction is markedly reduced, even though H and CO solubilities are much higher than in hydrocarbons. This is attributed to substantial mass-transfer resistances through an encapsulating hydrocarbon layer around the catalyst particles. The effect of the nature of inert liqs. on several other reactions is also discussed.
