The chem. synthesis of these compds. and their N-methylated analogs is reported. Oral administration of 4-diphenylmethylpiperidine (I) [19841-73-7] and its N-methylated deriv. (130 and 260 .mu.moles/kg) to rats for 14 days resulted in hyperglycemia, reduced pancreatic insulin [9004-10-8] content and the formation of large vacuoles in the cytoplasm of pancreatic islet cells. No effect on .beta.-cell morphol. or insulin content was obsd. after administration of 2- [519-74-4] and 3-diphenylmethylpiperidine [63175-10-0] and their N-methylated analogs.
