The method is based on the phase sepn. of polymer chains within w/o/w emulsion droplets. The microcapsules have a diam. of about 200 mm and a porous shell with a thickness of about 20 mm. It was confirmed that Baker's yeast cells were immobilized in the microcapsule core. The Baker's yeast cells immobilized in the microcapsules catalyzed the asym. redn. of acetophenone to (S)-1-phenylethanol in org. media when a cofactor regeneration scheme is implemented. The product is a chiral alc., and had a high enantiomer excess. The effects of parameters such as the addn. of a cosubstrate and the cell immobilization toward a different immobilized carrier have been investigated. .
