DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 55 (Ferrous Metals and Alloys) Accelerated corrosion tests (water-film, steam-pressure, condensing-type humidity cabinet, 5% neutral salt-spray, and water-fog) were used to measure the humid-storage stain resistance of chromated and untreated galvanized coatings on steel in order to det. their interchangeability and relations to each other. The untreated specimens were quickly stained in each test. ZnO was formed in each test, basic Zn carbonate [57363-35-6], 4ZnO.CO2.4H2O on the humidity-cabinet test specimens, and ZnCO3.Zn(OH)2 [5263-02-5] on the water-fog test specimens. ZnO, ZnCO3, and ZnCl2.4Zn(OH)2 [11073-22-6] were detected on the salt-spray test specimens. The staining rates of chromated specimens were inversely proportional to the amts. of Cr in the sheet surface; aging of the chromate film for .gtoreq.24 h decreased the staining in most of the tests.
