The presence of certain F-contg. surfactants or polymers in the cake during the drying step inhibits agglomeration and gives a softer pigment. Thus, adding 50 g trichlorotrifluoroethane (I) [26523-64-8] to 1 L 1% aq. suspension of Carmine 6B (II) [5281-04-9] and mixing the compn. >20 s at 8000 rpm and >20 s at 1000 rpm gave a clear aq. upper layer and a granular adzuki wax-like pigment cake contg. I. Removal of the aq. phase left the pigment cake which did not adhere to the vessel walls or stirrer and which, when dried 3 h at 120° and pulverized, produced 10 g II. Approx. 99% of the I was recovered.

The a form had higher content of water of crystn. and was transformed into the b form by releasing water of crystn. at about 80°. The b form readily transformed into the a form under high humidity. In water, the b form had higher soly. and transformed into the a form. On the other hand, in EtOH [64-17-5], the a form had higher soly. and transformed into the b form. No transformation was obsd. in nonpolar solvents. The transformation could be retarded by abietic acid [514-10-3] and K salts.
