Synthesis of
Synthesis of .alpha.- and .beta.-N-oxalyl-L-.alpha.,.beta.-diaminopropionic acids and their isolation from seeds of Lathyrus sativus. Harrison, Frances Lynne; Nunn, P. B.; Hill, R. R. (Dep. Biochem., King's Coll., London, Engl.). Phytochemistry, 16(8), 1211-15 (English) 1977. CODEN: PYTCAS. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Section cross-reference(s): 11, 17, 23 The .alpha.- [61277-72-3] and .beta.-N-oxalyl L-.alpha.,.beta.-diaminopropionic acid (I) [5302-45-4] have been chem. synthesized and also isolated from seed exts. of L. sativus. Chem. and phys. properties of the natural and synthetic isomers were in good agreement. The toxicity of the .alpha.-isomer to chicks was evaluated and compared with that of the .beta.-isomer.
Tissue distribution and metabolism of the Lathyrus sativus neurotoxin, L-3-oxalylamino-2-aminopropionic acid, in the squirrel monkey
Tissue distribution and metabolism of the Lathyrus sativus neurotoxin, L-3-oxalylamino-2-aminopropionic acid, in the squirrel monkey. Mehta, T.; Zarghami, N. S.; Cusick, P. K.; Parker, A. J.; Haskell, Betty E. (Dep. Food Sci., Univ. Illinois, Urbana, Ill., USA). J. Neurochem., 27(6), 1327-31 (English) 1976. CODEN: JONRA9. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) 14C-labeled L-3-oxalylamino-2-aminopropionic acid (I) [5302-45-4], a neurotoxin from L. sativus, was injected i.p. (250-500 .mu.g/kg) into young squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) whose blood-brain barrier was mature; anal. of the tissues showed that the central nervous system (CNS) contained 0.15-0.22% of the radioactivity with 75% of this being found in the cerebral hemispheres. Most of the radioactivity recovered from the urine and tissues was unchanged with none being recovered in the expired air as radioactive CO2. Thus I appears to be able to enter the CNS of animals with a mature, undamaged blood-brain barrier.
